We have made a huge progress but still not finished with the control software. It takes longer but it will be much more appealing.

The new DAC-S software development is almost done. See how the LCD display looks below.
This is the start-up screen:
This is when powered up:
You can see the volume bar at the top and volume also shown in dB with 0.5dB step (to the right). There will also be a +/- 6dB balance control. The volume bar disappears and MUTE flashes if Mute button is pressed (remote control only). Digital filter settings "Normal" and "Short Dly". And finally the input selected with the incoming sampling frequency shown next to it. The LCD display can be turned OFF from the button to the left of it or with the remote.
We are now taking deposits for the first five DAC-S boxes. Two are already gone. Please email for more details.

Alex,
Excellent, comprehensive description and the unit is handsome.
Might want to add the dimensions (unless I missed it somewhere).
Soundwise, how does it compare to an upgraded Denon?

Phil,
Thank you for nice words and suggestion! We will update the site with dimensions and weight.
Honestly, I don't have a Denon here to compare with, but the DAC-S does well against the NWO; it is truly a great sounding DAC we are proud of. I feel that, at its $5K price-point, the new DAC-S is a bargain considering its performance and features. I am certain that it is capable of outperforming similar products costing 2-3 times more.
Of course, just like with most DACs available, there is no SACD playback capability.

Alex,
Good luck with the new DAC-S. Seems very versatile. I wonder how many folks will use it with a computer vs. a transport...
If I didn't have a signficant (for me) investment in the Denon, I'd seriously think about the DAC.

Phil,
You have the latest/last Denon upgrade that I think sounds marvelous too. It has its beauty being with SE tube stage and similar sonic character to both NWO and DAC-S because the same DAC chips are used.
I still believe that best results are obtained from a single box player, not separates but with consumers shifting to computer based digital transports, an external DAC is a must. This is where the DAC-S comes in.
Of course, you can use the Denon as a DAC as well with its digital input. I'd highly recommend the Hiface USB to S/PDIF interface from M2Tech.

Thanks, Alex.
Yes, the Denon does sound wonderful. Since I've been playing with the idea of computer audio, the DAC-S was of interest. But, as you say, using the the Hiface would provide the computer connection while leaving the one-box player with SACD capabilities.
So does the Denon's digital input accept 192/24 bit?
I agree about the appeal of a one-box player. If I had the green, the NWO-SS would be mine! Some day, perhaps.
Regards,

Phil,
Yes, the Denon has the same digital receiver as used in the DAC, so it accepts 192/24.
With the Hiface, try Foobar set to 24 bit output and Kernel Streaming (KS) plug-in enabled.

Thank you, Alex.
I know you mentioned before the best program to rip CDs, best uncompressed format, etc. Perhaps some folks would like to see that posted permanently in a thread. Seem relevant now that the DAC-S exists.

Alex, congratulations on getting the DAC-S finished. It looks amazing from the pictures! It's interesting that you used the Hiface from M2Tch. I haven't heard it before, but read good things about it.
I look forward to having a chance to hear the DAC-S. For me, my Denon works incredibly well. I've been using it as a DAC 80% of the time using my Macbook Pro as a transport. I'm connecting via firewire using a Weiss AFI1 unit to convert firewire to a digital signal.
Glad to hear things are progressing with APL Hi-Fi. When are you coming down to San Diego? We have to get together.
Take care!

Alex, That's excellent news about you new DAC! Congratulations and I wish you great success with it. With all the rage about servers and use of computers in audio, this is a good time to come out with a DAC to fill a need. Are you going to take it to the RMAF this year?
Best Regards,

The embedding of the Hiface USB interface inside the DAC chassis is yet another example of Alex's innovative approach to his products. Besides, the stock naked Hiface USB interface is rather ugly.
