|
|
After almost 30 years since I had my first speakers pair built in Bulgaria, it is a "dream come true" for me to announce the release of the Gravitas NB-1 speakers. NB stands for No Boundaries which Mr. Waterman has coined-in after he auditioned the prototypes some time ago. Indeed, the Gravitas NB-1 must be heard to be appreciated. It does not really matter how long I will write about the way they are designed or how amazing they sound; you really have to hear them! Still, here is some technical info:
1. Two 7 inch Scan-Speak Revelator mid-bass drivers with non-resonant, laser-cut paper cones.
2. Scan-Speak Revelator 1 1/8 inch Silk dome tweeter. This amazing thing has 500Hz resonant frequency and no ferrofluid in the magnetic gap, so it can cover pretty wide range with ease, extends to 30,000Hz and is lightening fast.
3. Point-to-point wired First order crossover, impedance corrected. Now this one took me almost 5 years to perfect, but I finally did it, and I'm proud.
4. All-hand-made in Europe, curved-sides enclosures from 1 inch HDF with three types of special dampening materials inside.
5. Sensitivity is 89dB, impedance 4 Ohms. In-room frequency response 30Hz-30KHz. Port on the back.
Here is a picture, more to come:

Very cool. Has a price been set and will there be other models in the line?

Introductory price is $15K, including stands, Granite bases and DNM speaker wire of your specified length. Price will be $20K on Jan 1st 2010.
Yes, we will have a smaller version with one 7 inch mid-bass driver and same tweeter.

Alex delivered a pair to me on Saturday and I am thrilled. They have tremendous extension but my strongest impression is the immediacy that they bring to the music. My brother's immediate reaction was to say that the speakers "sparkle." It is a tremendous combination of musical detail while at the same time sounding real and emotionally invovling. So many background sounds now emerge as clearly delineated musical notes from specific instruments.
I remain shocked that the speakers have that much bass, but that is just part of it. There is also an absence of any harsh, metalic sound. The current emphasis on the newest technologies often comes with a price of shrill, metallic tweeters. The NB-1s soar, but do not have any articial, metallic qualities to them.
I remain ecstatic that I bought them, and this is long before any break-in has occurred. Thank you, Alex! |
